INCI: Potassium Sorbate
Description: Potassium sorbate is a synthetic product that mimics the natural molecule. It is in every way identical. Its manufacture is ecological thus its safe use provided that the concentration is respected. The use of synthetic potassium sorbate is more ecological than the manufacture of potassium sorbate stemming directly from nature (which would require large amounts of organic matter, which is not really viable or possible, given the quantities used). In any case, it is the same molecule. For all these reasons, some still consider it a "natural" product. Potassium sorbate, therefore, ranks in natural conservatives, despite its synthetic nature. The choice to use it or not is personal :) The fact remains that it is a clean, safe, reliable, healthy curator for us and for the environment.
Properties: Antifungal, antibacterial.
Use: Conservative in the formulas containing an aqueous phase.
Applications: Any product containing an aqueous phase and whose pH is between 2.0 and 6.5.
Concentration: 0.15 to 0.3% if used alone or 0.1 to 0.2% if it is combined with another preservative. Often uses sodium benzoate, but can also be used alone with a stable aqueous phase.
Solubility: Potassium sorbate releases sorbic acid, its active ingredient, in water. Soluble in cold water.
Aspect: Underbid white powder or granules.
pH: Effective at pH located between 2.0 and 6.5
